Mary
Ann Drinan, Assistant Campaign Manager
Born in Chicago, Mary Ann Drinan learned about
local politics at an early age as precinct captains from both major
political parties frequently visited the neighborhood to talk about
issues and bring the latest messages from party leaders. As a
teenager, she supported Martin Luther King’s civil rights movement,
registering new voters and teaching math and English composition in
inner city schools and worked in the John F. Kennedy campaign,
arranging meetings for his contributors.
At Clarke College, she earned a degree in English
and history, later a masters degree in Public Administration from the Kansas State
University system. She taught high school in the Appalachian Mountains
of Virginia near Charlottesville in the late 1960s during the first
years of integration. Later, while living in Hays, Kansas, she
campaigned for local candidates, served on the City-County Planning
Commission, and was a member of the regional health care planning
agency. She has also administered an EPA grant to study and
publicize issues regarding regional water quality.
While living in Washington, DC, she worked as a
journalist for Federal-State Reports, focusing on health and safety
issues. She has been a professor of political science at Palomar College
in San Marcos since 1990,
studied mediation and negotiation at Pepperdine University, and has
managed several successful North County campaigns.
